Mirroring E-service for Brick and Mortar Retail: An Assessment and Survey
The digital transformation increasingly impacts the competitive retail market structure in favor of e-commerce and digital business models, while many Brick and Mortar (BaM) retailers are struggling to meet customersâ expectations. Supported by the customer adaption of e-commerce and digital technologies, this paper applies the lens of channel complementary theory to BaM. We examine, which e-service touchpoints from e-commerce can be transferred to the physical servicescape of BaM retail to complement customer journeys. Drawing from the dominant design theory, we first assess leading e-commerce solutions to identify dominant e-service touchpoints, which are then mirrored for their application in BaM retail. Second, we surveyed 250 shoppers to elicit the likeliness of use regarding these touchpoints. Our results provide a foundation for both academia and retail to advance the knowledge of relevant e-service touchpoints in BaM
Based on the recent introduction of EESSI, the task of this study is to identify further digitalization potential for the Systems of Social Security in Germany. In doing so, a medium to long-term perspective was adopted in order to highlight the potential of digitalization in the form of and on the basis of current and innovative concepts and technologies. The identification of the potential in different areas was based on semi-structured interviews with experts who are familiar with EESSI and general topics linked to the digitalization of the Social Security system in Germany. During this study, it was possible to consult regional and federal organizations in order to allow for the development of a broad picture of the current challenges concerning ongoing and future digitalization efforts. Next to EESSI, the conducted interviews discussed general challenges linked to digitalization processes. Based on these challenges, the digitalization potential was derived in different application areas. In doing so, multiple perspectives have been applied, to discuss not only potential benefits for the employees and the social security institutions, but also the benefits for citizens. If applicable, the derived potential was discussed in terms of its ability to prevent fraud and misuse within the systems of Social Security in Germany. In total, eight potential digitization approaches were derived and operationalized in the form of dedicated recommendations for action. They may show first paths that should be considered in the context of the future digitalization actions

Reasons for Failures of Sharing Economy Businesses
The rapid growth of successful sharing economy businesses like Airbnb and Uber poses a threat to traditional value chains. However, many lesser-known sharing platforms have faced serious setbacks and ceased to operate. We have compiled a profile of failed sharing businesses so that others can learn from their mistakes. Our research identified seven common reasons for the failures and four significant differences between failed and successful sharing businesses. Our findings will help managers of aspiring sharing businesses to mitigate the risks of entering the sharing market.Click here for free presentation slides (pdf
Usage of Local Online Platforms in Retail: Insights from retailers\u27 expectations
Many high street retailers currently face unprecedented challenges arising from the competition with online retail sellers and city centers losing their attractiveness to customers. Aiming to retain footfall to their stores, retailers and local service providers are exploring how digital technology, such as digital platforms, can be harnessed to provide new touchpoints. However, little is known about how high street retailers are using digital platforms and, in particular, Local Online Platforms (LOPs), which are restricted to a geographic area, mostly a city. To address this gap, we conduct qualitative research to investigate the usage of LOPs. Interviews with 19 small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) retailers reveal that they will use digital online platforms, preferentially LOPs, as long as entry barriers are kept low in order to acquire new customers, promote loyalty and strengthen local cooperation between SMEs on the high street. We outline our plans to validate our hypotheses with behavioral data in forthcoming interviews and surveys. This research in progress will thus inform the next research efforts aimed to provide practical insights on the design, adoption, and usage of LOPs to benefit both software designers and SME retailers
INDUSTRY DEMAND FOR ANALYTICS: A LONGITUDINAL STUDY
Data analytics has become an important part of companies in industry, leading to an increase in the demand for analytics experts. Data analytics is also a central aspect of trends such as âBig Dataâ, âData Scienceâ, âArtificial Intelligenceâ. As such, for potential analytics professionals to have relevant job skills, educational institutions need to have an up-to-date picture of the demanded job skills. We studied the recent past to better anticipate future developments of analytics job skills through a study based on text mining using job advertisements from 2014 and 2019 summing up to a total of 17,282 advertisements. We investigated how these trends evolved by looking at meaning of words using associated words as well as topics obtained from topic modeling. Our longitudinal study reveals a shift in prevalence and meaning of analytics trends in the industry. It shows a small shift from business oriented job skills towards analytical and technical ones. This finding is accompanied by increasing popularity of âBig Dataâ, in contrast with the reduced popularity of âBusiness Intelligenceâ. Additionally, we observed how âMachine Learningâ is becoming more strongly associated with the field of data science itself
Identification of humid periods in the Atacama Desert through hillslope activity established by infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating
Geological records indicate that the hyper-aridity in the Atacama Desert has prevailed since at least the mid-Miocene, with shorter periods of increased humidity punctuating long-term aridity. The 7-m-high accumulation of colluvial sediments at the Salar Grande (21 degrees S/70 degrees W) studied here provides a key palaeoclimate record to understand hillslope dynamics and its relation to humid periods. While 1 degrees Be surface exposure ages point to long-term surface stability of the flat upslope surface, a combination of humidity-driven soil creep, overland flow and soil creep related to seismic shaking, caused denudation of the hillslope and accumulation of several metres of colluvium over much shorter timescales during the last 130 ka. A robust chronology for the hillslope sediments has been established by using Infrared Stimulated luminescence (pIR-IR225 protocol) on K-feldspar extracts from nine samples collected within the accumulation. A series of tests has been carried out to confirm the suitability of the method. The estimated ages indicate accelerated sedimentation at 35-80 ka, and 100-130 ka, which are interpreted as periods with more humid climate conditions than present. These findings agree with climate variations in the hyper-arid Atacama indicated by the activity of coastal alluvial fans and river catchments
Development of a steep erosional gradient over a short distance in the hyperarid core of the Atacama Desert, northern Chile
Although generally considered to exist under hyperarid conditions over the long term, landscapes in many parts of the Coastal Cordillera of northern Chile have undergone fluvial erosion. Small-scale drainage systems in this mountain range are mostly isolated from river networks and associated processes originating in the Precordillera or the High Andes to the east, thus providing natural laboratories to investigate the interplay between erosion, atmospheric deposition, tectonics and local (micro-) climatic conditions. In this study, we present a set of cosmogenic Be-10 and Al-26 derived, catchment-wide erosion rates along a short (2.5 km) E-W transect on the northern rim of the Rio Loa Canyon in the Coastal Cordillera of northern Chile (latitude 21.4 degrees S). Here, a flat sedimentary gravel surface, which was deposited before the Middle Miocene, becomes increasingly dissected and changes into a badland-like topography to the west. The Be-10 erosion rates increase by approximately an order of magnitude from east to west, reflecting (1) localised tectonic movements, (2) geologically recent base level lowering, (3) time-integrated (micro-) climatic gradients and (4) the presence/absence of gyperete. These findings are corroborated by analysis of geomorphologic parameters, which point towards the presence of two fundamentally different erosional regimes in this small study area. These regimes are sharply delineated along a topographically modest tectonic ridge. To the west, a detachment-limited erosion regime prevails, while in the east a transport-limited regime is dominant. The presence or absence of gyperete, whose prevalence is governed by (micro-) climatic conditions, generally appears to reflect the respective erosional regimes. The erosion rates we infer point to a long-term process of differential drainage evolution in the study area, likely on timescales of millions of years
Bcl-x(L) as prognostic marker and potential therapeutic target in cholangiocarcinoma
Intrahepatic, perihilar, and distal cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA, pCCA, dCCA) are highly malignant tumours with increasing mortality rates due to therapy resistances. Among the mechanisms mediating resistance, overexpression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins (Bcl-2, Bcl-x(L), Mcl-1) is particularly important. In this study, we investigated whether antiapoptotic protein patterns are prognostically relevant and potential therapeutic targets in CCA. Bcl-2 proteins were analysed in a pan-cancer cohort from the NCT/DKFZ/DKTK MASTER registry trial (n = 1140, CCA n = 72) via RNA-sequencing and transcriptome-based protein activity interference revealing high ranks of CCA for Bcl-x(L) and Mcl-1. Expression of Bcl-x(L), Mcl-1, and Bcl-2 was assessed in human CCA tissue and cell lines compared with cholangiocytes by immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, and quantitative-RT-PCR. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the upregulation of Bcl-x(L) and Mcl-1 in iCCA tissues. Cell death of CCA cell lines upon treatemnt with specific small molecule inhibitors of Bcl-x(L) (Wehi-539), of Mcl-1 (S63845), and Bcl-2 (ABT-199), either alone, in combination with each other or together with chemotherapeutics was assessed by flow cytometry. Targeting Bcl-x(L) induced cell death and augmented the effect of chemotherapy in CCA cells. Combined inhibition of Bcl-x(L) and Mcl-1 led to a synergistic increase in cell death in CCA cell lines. Correlation between Bcl-2 protein expression and survival was analysed within three independent patient cohorts from cancer centers in Germany comprising 656 CCA cases indicating a prognostic value of Bcl-x(L) in CCA depending on the CCA subtype. Collectively, these observations identify Bcl-x(L) as a key protein in cell death resistance of CCA and may pave the way for clinical application
